My approach to the Out of This World plot is OUT OF THIS DARKNESS. I know it is a sinister title, but there is nothing sinister about the effect. Just like in the original by Paul Curry, the participants divide the cards into two piles, and for the climax, they have miraculously separated all the reds and the blacks perfectly using their intuition.

I have worked sporadically on the Out of This World plot for over 10 years. I got close to a version I was happy with on numerous occasions but then abandoned the premise again and again as something was niggling me. Then, I took a break from writing, picked up a deck of playing cards and finally solved all the internal issues I had previously. I gave it a test drive and then performed my handling extensively. Now, OUT OF THIS DARKNESS is a part of my repertoire for casual performances.

Below is further information:

FOREWORD by BRYAN MILES

"I am confident that after reading Out of This Darkness, your hands will be itching to pick up a deck."

* Quote taken from Bryan’s foreword.

  • OUT OF THIS DARKNESS is a half deck Out of this world. One of my issues was I hated watching a participant deal 52 cards. However, I have included a full deck version if watching someone deal a full deck doesn't bother you.

  • The participant ALWAYS gets one card wrong, which adds believability to the effect and facilitates the devious method. As a bonus, you can always predict the colour they deal incorrectly, and a version is included where you can even predict the card(s) they get wrong. You are always in total control.

  • There is NO switching the markers, counting, or tracking. You can reveal both piles simultaneously. Essentially, you hand the cards to the participants, and they divide them into two piles.

  • Finally, and most importantly, it is EASY to do. No finger-slinging skills are required.

Includes additional ideas, plus two bonus routines, DEXTER OR SINISTER? and MAGICIAN OR MUGGLE?, which don't implement playing cards.

It is time to step OUT OF THIS DARKNESS.

ACCLAIM FOR OOTD

This is going to replace any Out of This World I have ever used.
— CHRIS EDWARDS

‘Out of This World’ has fascinated magicians and audiences alike since its creation. Kaleb’s version? It’s slick, smart, and hits all the right notes. The choreography works like a charm, and the manuscript’s loaded with juicy subtleties and presentation gems. I’m stealing it for my show—gladly. Big kudos to Kaleb for adding his brick to this magical monument!
— JULIAN LOSA

OOTD is the most logical and well-thought out development of the classic OOTW ploy I have come across - both presentationally and methodically. It has, in fact, fully replaced the version I’ve been doing for the past several years. I’ll save you all any hyperbole and just give my honest and unreserved recommendation for Kaleb’s publication.
— T. KRAUSE

I really enjoyed reading Kaleb’s work on OOTW, and so will you. I particularly loved his alternative presentation ideas, and will be using his ‘D or S?’ for certain. His creativity is contagious—you’re in for a treat.
— Mark Elsdon

Kaleb’s handling is super clean and direct. He solves all the potential issues that some performers have with the classic version.
— MARC PAUL

You’ve reignited my interest in OOTW. You’ll excuse me for using a magic effect sales trope, but this WILL be going into my closeup set.

Bravo, Kaleb, Bravo.
— TERRY TYSON

I was very lucky to get a sneak peek of this release when Kaleb Wade gave an ‘off the cuff’ performance of it in Blackpool this year. I was thoroughly impressed!!

From the blurb in the foreword it’s clear that Wade set out to address certain points of dissatisfaction he had with previous versions of this effect. Having played with different variations myself in the past (most notably the one by Larry Hass, which builds on the work of U.F. Grant) I was very keen to see what this offering brought to the table.

In short this is a clever, well thought out, and well written project that I would absolutely recommend!!

As usual, Wade offers several variations based around his core routine, including a fully impromptu version. My personal favourite is ‘Dexter or Sinister’, which uses hand written billets rather than playing cards. That is just my preferred style, but I genuinely think that any magician or mentalist who has an interest in this plot will find something here.

The addition of videos demonstrating how Wade choreographs two key moments in the routine is an excellent addition to the ebook.

Overall, this is a thoroughly clever and streamlined approach to a classic plot, delivered with the panache that the community is coming to expect from this underground creator. Well done.
— STEVE CROSS

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Kaleb’s work, and I always eagerly anticipate his new routines. As a longtime admirer of Paul Curry’s Out of This World effect, I was thrilled when Kaleb shared his take on it—Out of This Darkness. Once again, I’m reminded of why I love his thinking so much.

Kaleb’s version of Out of This World addresses a common frustration of mine: the need to switch markers halfway through the routine. I’ve been using my own impromptu version for a while, but never fully explored ways to eliminate that step. Enter Out of This Darkness. It’s not entirely impromptu, but it can be, and it still works flawlessly that way (see: “Anytime Darkness”). The routine is snappy, concise, and completely guilt-free—no need to worry about the marker or pile switch.

I hate to sound cliché, but this is another one I’ll be using almost all the time, just like everything Kaleb creates. It’s clean, efficient, and packs a serious punch—while remaining streamlined. While you can use a full deck, I personally prefer a more minimalist approach, and that’s one of the many things I love about this routine.

Kaleb also includes some fantastic subtleties and tips that elevate the effect to another level. For me, the bonus effects—particularly Dexter or Sinister? and the variation Dark Prediction—are a big highlight. They’re perfect for my style, and I can’t wait to incorporate them into my performances.

All in all, Out of This Darkness is another winner from Kaleb. I’m eagerly looking forward to his upcoming book—his work is always a must-own.
